I've found both Sony and Apple guilty of having proprietary software bundled with their products which at best consumes unneccesary resources and at worst cause machine crashes.
I would not select either as a manufacturer of choice for a portable music system, despite them having probably the most attractive products available, unless I took steps to isolate the management software on a separate (real or virtual) machine.
Very disturbing that this originates from copy-protected music CDs in some cases - it's clearly not safe to buy music legally anymore.

Apple doesn't secretly place hidden code that can restrict what you do with your computer.FatherJack wrote:I've found both Sony and Apple guilty of having proprietary software bundled with their products which at best consumes unneccesary resources and at worst cause machine crashes.

I was referring to the fact that in order to play a Quicktime movie someone has sent me, rather than just grabbing a codec, Apple would not only like me to download an application, part of which runs all the time in the system tray but also feel the need to "encourage" me to download iTunes, which is superfluous to the task I was attempting, and redundant as I already have Winamp (doubly-so, qv. your post)deject wrote:Apple doesn't secretly place hidden code that can restrict what you do with your computer.FatherJack wrote:I've found both Sony and Apple guilty of having proprietary software bundled with their products which at best consumes unneccesary resources and at worst cause machine crashes.

BTW, I have no requirement for a portable audio system at all, so it's not like I have an axe to grind - I think Spoodie's probably got it right though, with tools for the job - get a Mac to run your iPod, or a Sony machine with pre-installed software to run your Sony device. I do have a Sony laptop as part of my "Entertainment system" but I had to scrub it clean to do the job I wanted it to.

In my opinion, Apple is the closest to doing DRM right. They don't pull any tricks. You know what you can do with the songs you buy. Yes you're stuck with iTunes, but that's lightyears better than sneaking in a rootkit that can be used to itself be used to do all kinds of shit. I've read that with this rootkit, you can hide ANYTHING with just the phrase "$sys$" in front of a program.
to Father Jack:
a) You can turn off the system tray thing.
b) You can download Quicktime on it's own without iTunes, although it's not obvious how to do so.
c) There are quicktime alternatives, most notably "Quicktime Alternative."
