Prefab and modeling challenge

Post by Baliame »

Now as suggested before you can help me with my Left 4 Dead project so here's something that you could do to help me out.

Create prefab(s) or model(s) in the following categories:
- Kitchen appliances (30-38px high, 32-64px long, width does not matter)
- Office furniture
- Buildings (1024 high, width and length does not matter)

Go here if don't know how to create prefabs.

Criteria:
- Match the size limitations if specified
- Must look good
- (prefabs) Can only use materials and models in the Left 4 Dead cache file (steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\pak01_dir.vpk, you can open it with the newest GCFScape) or custom materials which you made (in which case include it). This is due to a weird habit of L4D not loading vanilla HL2 materials.
- (models) Try to keep the polygon count down.
- Try to match the left 4 dead theme. Note: A big bright pink cock shaped building does not. (Although if you do happen to be able to make one of these I might as well include it :P)

Stuff:
- Setting up Hammer for L4D
- The real one
- GCFScape for vpk files
- L4D FGD

If it looks good, I will use it in the map.

Good call Bubbles. I might even give something a go myself. Got to start somewhere, eh?

Is this in Hammer, or the Softimage XSI thingy?

I remember there being some kitcheny things in a couple of the existing L4D campaigns, so was going to try and open up the maps in Hammer to have a look at them, but I only got as far as finding out there's no .fgd file for L4D.

I'm lead to believe that it's not actually required to start working on maps, etc. intended for L4D, just for the finished article. Is that right?

I'll have a go at this. Although the chances of completing anything remotely useful are not promising.

FJ: Either. You create prefabs in Hammer, models in XSI. Whichever suits you the most. Obviously models would be better, but I can't expect people to go through the torment it is to fuck Hammer until it finally says YES YOUR MODEL IS OKAY.

The FGD file is not necessary - it only contains data about Left 4 Dead specific entities which I'm not sure you will need. If you'd need it anyway, check http://www.gimmik.net/terrenteller/file ... 4DInfo.zip

Added links to useful stuff to op.
