It would have been perfectly fine to use infectious in the manner you used contagious in.

Infectious is used to describe virus-like propagation, so 'infectious laughter' is perfectly valid and a common phrase. Contagious is used a little less, I think.

Infectious is used more I think, but it's an example of misnomer being common place.

As far as I knew it, infectious just means "being able to cause an infection", referring to biological agents such as viruses and bacteria from an outside source. Contagious more simply just means spread easily from person to person. An infection can be contagious or non-contagious. Of course a non-contagious infection can be spread from person to person but it needs specific contact.

So in that respect laughing because of hearing someone laughing is more akin to contagious than infectious.

Also, if laughter is said to be infectious, yawning is usually described as contagious.

Semantics needs to get its shit together.
