Although some areas in the Eclipse Phase world still rely on a traditional money based economic system, many others use a new system called Rep. In simple terms, Rep is your reputation with a specific group. If you have a high Rep people will happily give you stuff and help you out, if you have a low Rep they wont. The reason it differs from a regular money based system is that it isn't a set "thing X is worth 12 Rep" kind of a system. Rep is based on scoring systems in several all pervading social networks. Having someone give you a thing because you have a high Rep wont necessarily cause your Rep to go down, but constantly asking for stuff and never giving anything back absolutely will. Similarly, your Rep could go up or down based on things you say or things you don't do just as much as transactions and jobs you complete. Its a measure of your worth to society, and those who are worth more get more in return.

There are a few different Rep networks, and its not always clear which ones you should be part of, so here is a bit of a breakdown:

@-Rep: also known as "Circle @", @-Rep is used by anarchists, Barsoomians (the guys who live on Mars), Extropians (anarcho-capitalists who go in for money and property but not government/hypercorp control), Scum (kind of tribal space nomads) and Titanians (socialists who colonised Titan). Concentrate on this if you are a free-wheeling, "fight the Man!" kind of character, or a space pirate. More useful the further out to the edge of the system you go. You want the Autonomist Networking skill to go with this.

C-Rep: CivicNet rep, used by the Jovian Republic (Fascist conservatives, also known as the Junta), the Lunar-Lagrange Alliance (corp backed group that live in orbit around the Earth and want to take it back), Morningstar Constellation (The controlling government of Venus, split off from...), The Planetary Consortium (a big group of hypercorps) and many other hypercorps. Get this if you want to work with big business or government types. Its basically the opposite of @-Rep, and is more useful the closer in to the core of the system you are. You want the Hypercorp Networking skill to go with this.

E-Rep: EcoWave is used by the ecologists, the Green types and the people who want to take back earth and return it to its glorious old natural past. Get this is you are a tree loving hippie, or an uplift thats wants to go "home". You want the Ecologist Networking skill to go with this.

F-Rep: called Fame, pretty self explanatory. Socialites, artists and the media are all over this. Get it if you either want to be famous or want to be known by famous people. You want the Media Networking skill to go with this.

G-Rep: Guanxi is used by the triads (the predominant form of organised crime in the EP) and...well, all the other crims. Get this if you want to be an Al Capone type or the Wolf from Pulp Fiction. You want the Criminal Networking skill to go with this.

I-Rep: The Eye is only used by firewall. A high I-rep means people in the organisation know you, trust you and believe you when you say that the fate of humanity relies on giving you that thing you are asking for right the hell now. It wont be useful that often, but when its useful it could be the difference between everyone lives or humanity is doomed. You want the Firewall Networking skill to go with this.

R-Rep: RNA (Research Network Affiliation). Its used by all the science types, whether that's a hypercorp lab-tech or an entire Argonaut habitat (Argonauts are a science based society who have very strong beliefs about open source, shared information and so on.) Do I really need to tell you who should be getting a good dollop of R-Rep? You want the Scientists Networking skill to go with this.

Drones
Control Methods
A lot of the confusion players face with drones centres on their control methods. There are, basically, three different ways to control your drones; Indirect, Direct and Jumped In.

Indirect Control
Indirect Control uses the drones inbuilt "dog brain" to interpret commands sent to it from the rigger. The commands have to be simple, such as "follow this man" or "shoot anyone who comes through this door", but can be chained together to form a sort of script, such as "shoot anyone who comes through this door, except for this person, until 6pm, then go to this address". The level of complexity can be best judged by thinking, "could a well trained dog understand something this simple", hence the term dog brain. Ignoring practical issues like dogs being unable to fire guns: as long as you think a dog would understand, then a drone would understand.
Of course, like dogs, drones can be easily tricked when left to think by themselves too, but we will get to that later.
The commands themselves are sent to the drone as messages, like emails, which the drone then carries out the best it can. Because the drone is carrying out these commands, its stats are used for any tests that are needed.

Advantages: You don't need to keep in wireless range with the drone throughout. Once it has its command, it can happily pootle off and do its thing. This means you can send drones in to wireless-inhibited areas, or outside of your broadcast range, or even send them off with their wireless disabled (I'll go into why you might want to later). Of course, if you use the fact that the device doesn't need its wireless, you wont be able to get live video or audio streams from it, but you can always record.

Disadvantages: Smart as they may be for machines, they are still stupid compared to an actual person. A drones dog-brain can be tricked much easier than a human, and they react to the unexpected poorly, often by simply ignoring it.

Direct Control
Direct control is like using a real world RC vehicle. Usually done through AR, the rigger will have a set of virtual buttons and joysticks and the like that they use to manually guide the drone. Because the rigger is issuing commands to the device in real time, two way communication is needed. The rigger is constantly sending commands to the drone, and the drone is constantly sending video, sound and possibly other information back to the rigger.

Advantages: You can use your own stats for tests, rather than the drones stats. You are harder to confuse than a drone ( I hope!). You can control the drone whilst still running about and doing things yourself.

Disadvantages: Although you can switch between which one you are controlling pretty quickly, you can only actually control one at a time. Its also reliant on a proper wireless signal, so you cant send drones into wireless dead-spots unless you are going with them.

Jumping In
Jumping in is the term used for using your control rig to virtually put you into the device. Jumping in is like you are possessing the drone; you see and hear from its sensors, and moving it around is as easy and intuitive as moving your real body around. This gives some obvious advantages over the other methods of control, and is something that sets a proper rigger apart from a simple hacker with a drone. In game this is represented by some major dice pool modifiers. You can further increase these modifiers by "running hot": taking off the safety measures from the simsense to get that little bit extra performance. This is not without risks though, as the feedback caused by a drone being damaged whilst hot rigging can cause physical damage to the riggers real body.

Advantages: By far the most control over the drone, with some impressive dice pool modifiers to reflect this. This can make a rigger hot-rigging a combat drone a lethal weapon.

Disadvantages: Like direct control, you need two-way communication with your drone to do this, and you can only jump in one drone at a time. Also, this is the only form of rigging where your real body is in any immediate danger.

Security
Like with cyber implants, an often-overlooked element to drone rigging is security. Unless you intend to ride your drones into battle, you will need to be communicating with them via wireless, whatever form of control you opt for. Because of this, enemy hackers are going to be as much of a risk to you as enemy combatants: Ok, so the big troll with the autocannon might blow your fancy combat crawler to pieces, but the sneaky hacker in the building next door could take your drone over and kill all your mates with it. There can be few things more embarrassing than being shot with your own guns.

So what can you do about it? Well, first off, make sure that you are using the right control method. If you are sending the drone off to do a specific task and come back, why not indirectly control it, and get it to turn off its wireless entirely until its finished? A hacker cant hack it if there is no way of communicating with it. Of course, a lot of the time, this approach isn't practical. The enemy hacker can't communicate with it till its finished, but then neither can you. So what if you need to be in direct control?

Well, this all comes down to electronic warfare. For starters, as an absolute basic necessity, you need to slave your drones to your comlink. In laymans terms, this means that the drone will only take commands from your comlink, and any hacker wanting to mess around with it will need to either hack your comlink first, or spoof your comcode, so the device thinks the commands are coming from you when they are not. This is such a basic thing, and there is no reason why you wouldn't want to do this, that I assume that you have unless you specifically say otherwise.

The next step is encryption. Either buy the encryption software yourself, or get a friendly hacker to sort it out for you. Encrypting the communications between your comlink and your drone stop people spying on the data traffic, and mean that anyone wanting to spoof commands to your drone also needs to decrypt your communications. Of course, in the world of Shadowrun even the fanciest of encryption can be beaten given very little time, but that time can be all you need to be alerted of the hackers presence and do something about it.

The next level of nastiness, program wise, is called a databomb. Like the encryption, this is either bought yourself or installed by a hacker, and sits in the communication link between your drone and your 'link. When the nasty hacker gets past your encryption, and manages to spoof your link, there is a chance of him setting off the databomb.

The final level of program evils you can do, is to install ice. These programs can be as simple as tracing the hackers location, to as nasty as the Black Ice that copies itself to the hackers comlink, sends itself to everyone on the hackers address book, and kills them all with simsense feedback. Nasty.

Of course, the most simple security measure is the Electronic Warfare skill. With this, you can mask the signal of your drones so evil hackers cant find it. They cant hack what they cant see.

Possession
Possession rules are slightly different to normal spirit summoning rules, and in good SR tradition are splattered across two different books. In an effort to make it less of a headache, here are the steps to follow. This all presumes you don't have a bound spirit. If you do, skip the actual summoning bit and go straight to the possession itself.

Select a Spirit
The first step is to select which of the 6 spirit types available to your tradition you are going to summon. These are detailed in your tradition description, and cover basic themes like Combat or Manipulation. Each tradition has a different selection of spirits available to them.

Choose the Force of the spirit
The next step is to choose what force you want to summon. You can summon with a force up to twice your Magic rating, but anything over your magic rating means the Drain you will be resisting is Physical rather than Stun, just like with spells.

In its most basic terms; higher force = better spirit = harder summon.

Summoning Test
Now comes the actual summoning test itself. This is an opposed test, with the summoners Magic + Summoning skill against the spirits Force. 0 or less net hits for the summoner means that the summon has failed, and no spirit turns up. A positive number of net hits for the summoner is the number of tasks the spirit has to complete before it is allowed to clear off back to the astral.

Resist Drain
The drain test is similar to normal spellcasting. It is resisted with different attributes depending on your tradition, and the amount of drain to resist is equal to the number of hits the spirit scored in the summoning test, regardless of whether the summon was successful or not. Yes, that means you can utterly fail to summon a spirit, and still have to resist drain.

The drain has a minimum value of 2, even if the spirit cast one or even no hits.

Often, the dice pool the summoner is using is vastly greater than the amount of drain that needs resisting, so unless its dramatically important (for instance, if 1 point of stun would make the summoner pass out), the summoner can use the dice substitution rule, where they can trade 4 dice for 1 automatic hit. This can mean the summoner doesn't need to roll at all for drain.

Possession
Once you have the spirit summoned and owing you tasks, you move on to the fun bit: possession. For this guide, we are presuming the summoner is going to let the spirit possess themselves. This means there is no test required. If you are possessing someone or something else, you will need a successful possession test (page 101 of Street Magic).

Once the spirit has possessed you, you get the following changes:

Physical stats: These become the hosts + the spirits Force
Mental stats: These are equal to the spirits mental stats (note: these are based on, but not necessarily equal to the Force)
Only the spirits skills and powers can be used. Skills are rated at the spirits force.

Although the summoner is still "in there", they cant do much other than talk to the spirit. Because of that, the only skills they can use are knowledge skills.

Tasks
A spirit will stay until either it has ran out of tasks, the summoner dismisses it, it gets banished, or the sun comes up/goes down (depending on if it was summoned in the day or the night).

A task is generally either a combat instruction ("fight those guys", "protect this person", "guard this door"), an activity ("forge this sword", "bash down that wall", "Carry this heavy thing"), or a use of a spirit power. Small things, like walking about, or relaying messages from the summoner to the people in the real world are not counted as tasks. Just like in Aladdin, you cant cheat to get more; you cant just say "obey this person" and get free tasks.

Shadowrun is an RPG set in an alternative version of the real world.

Gear! You need it, whatever kind of character you play. Some need more, some need less, but all of you will have some. With such an over-abundance of choice in the Shadowrun world, its easy to get confused, miss stuff or just not realise that something is awesome. So here is a little something to get you on your way.

Everyone
I'll start off with some things that no runner should be without.

*Comlink - Without one, your character cant be contacted for jobs, cant read data sent to them about jobs, and is much harder to pay. Also, without a comlink, a lot of your other gear wont work properly. Unless you are a hacker, you dont need to spend a fortune on it, but you do need to get one.
*DocWagon contract - Not as essential, but still damn useful.
*Fake SIN's - even if you are a SINner, having a fake to run under is always the best option, as it lets you walk around out of the shadows easier if they aren't looking for the ID you are broadcasting.

Hacker
*Hot Sim - Not essential, but the +2 is very useful in the Matrix, the downside only matters if you get caught.
*Comlink - Even more than anyone else, you need the best available, your comlinks response and the system rating of your OS determine how many programmes you can have running, so it's important to look into properly.
*Programmes - Without them, you can do nothing. he higher the rating, the better your chance of getting the job done, just remember that it's illegal to have the more important ones.

Face
*Tailored Pheremones are almost a must. They are dead handy, adding a positive modifier to nearly everything a Face does.
*Some sort of disguise. Its far easier to not give a shit about getting caught on camera than turning them off (easily noticed) or deleting the footage (not always possible). good old fashioned latex will work, but nanopaste is better.
*Fake SINS. Many fake SINs. As many as you can afford, at as high a rating as you can afford. As a face, you will burn your SINs faster than any other character, and you don't want to suddenly find yourself burning your last one.
*Retinal duplication. Fake your way through eye-scanners, and sits in a cybereye, which is hardly going to panic security of the 2070's
*Bioware. If you want to beef up your character in any way, get the bioware option. Cyberwear can be detected by MAD scanners, cyberwear implant scanners and mages. Bioware can only be detected by mages, and even then its a shitload harder than detecting cyberwear. Remember, Faces are all about the subtle.

Rigger
*Control Rig. Technically, you can be a rigger without one, but +2 on all vehicle tests for 10k is not to be sniffed at.

Mage
Street Sam
*Extra IP's. It doesn't matter if you are a shooty type, a stabby type, or a punchy type. If you are going into combat, you need more than one IP, or you will be creamed.
Hello! I'll be periodically tearing bits from this page and putting them in a sensible place. I think a category for Personalities would be fitting, for all the different characters we have at this place. I also think Dejects mom should have a spot in this area. Games we play will be put into the main games category, and untill I find out how to nicely format the main page, it will stay as this vague FAQ, which tells enough at first-glance. Ta!
Gaming
5punk comprises of two parts, the forum and the games. Banter is a large part of what 5punk is about, and it takes place in both and often overlaps. In game this is made more fluid by most of us using Teamspeak.

The games that are played come and go quite quickly as people try new ones then tire of them. However, some do endure and can earn a regular slot on the 5cheduler for months or years. The best way to see which games are being played at the moment is to look at the 5cheduler. The best way to see which games are being played regularly is to check back through the 5cheduler. A lazy way to check which games are being played is to look at the sections below.
Reviews
5punk has a wealth of gamers of all levels and experience. This makes for an excellent testing ground for most games, and as such we have a reviews forum so that we can share our experiences. Many 5punkers have admitted to trusting the reviews of their fellow gamers to those of magazines. An index of our reviews can be found here.

Games currently popular
These are the games that will probably be in the 5cheduler right now, and have the highest chance of anyone playing at any given time.

*Call of Duty 4
*EVE
* Team Fortress 2
* World of Warcraft

Old Favourites
These games may not have many people playing regularly, but will probably draw some interest if scheduled.

*Battlefield 2
* Counter Strike: Source
*Call of Duty: United Offensive

Other games
Many games come and go, often being played by only a couple of people. Sometimes interest will flare if somebody raises ones profile again, sometomes not. The other games section has a list of games that certain 5punkers may be interested in playing.

Apps we use and how to use them.
Xfire
Xfire is an app that acts as an instant messenger with in game support and allows us to easily join other 5punkers in game.

With the 22/9/06 Xfire update, they introduced a Clan function, this allows users to add everyone to their contact list easily by joining the 5punk clan here, you'll usually be accepted within 24hours.

When signing up at the forum, make sure you add your Xfire username to your forum profile, as this is the core of 5punk, and without Xfire, we wouldn't even be here.

Teamspeak
Teamspeak is our voice comms medium of choice - given the ease of use, and reasonable licensing terms.

*Server Address: 217.112.95.67:8767
*Server Password: cranberry (or 6667)

Hamachi
Used to allow us to play older games over the Internet, also allows us to test experimental servers safely and securely.

Basic guide (placeholder until a 5punk-specific one is made)

If Hamachi is needed for a game, the network to join and password for the network will be posted in the scheduler.

Last.fm
We have a last.fm group, last.fm is an plug-in for your media player which keeps track of what music you have been playing.

Nintendo Wii Address Book
To allow the sharing of "Miis" and to send messages back and forth with Nintendo's console, you have to exchange Wii system addresses. More info here:
5punk Archives
As well as discussion that directly relates to our games, 5punkers also deposit a lot of information within the pages and threads. To aid in finding the information held in these often rambling threads they are archived below.

Geekfood
Threads about food have proved very popular on 5punk, and many recipies have been posted in various threads. A full catalogue of these recipies can be found here.

Hardware Stuff
Browser games
Many 5punkers play one or more of several web-based MMO games. These don't get scheduled but are popular nontheless due to the way they are played.

UrbanDead
Inconspicuous browser based MMORPG set in the zombie apocalypse, easily played at lunch time at work. 5punkers tend to gravitate towards pubs, occasionally organising excursions such as the Malton Pub Crawl in order to bring sunshine to the lives (or undeaths, as the case may be) of human and zombie alike.

Shartak
A Browser based MMPORG set on a desert island, Featuring Outsiders, Pirates and natives. It's awesome, you should all be playing it.
5punkers currently involved in lots of 5punky plans, as per usual.

Quite similar to Urban dead, likely because the maker was inspired by urbandead.

Atorian
Another inconspicuous browser based game. Set at some point in the future 5punkers in this game are purely self-defensive, but since there's always someone trying to take our planets we never stop fighting.

Travian
Romans, Gauls and Germans (Teutons), all building villages, cities and eventually nations while fighting it out in a browser. 5punkers (well, currently Grimmie, Buzz and Fab) are peaceful in this as well, mainly because the bigger alliances can cause pain.

Games currently popular
These are the games that will probably be in the 5cheduler right now, and have the highest chance of anyone playing at any given time.

*Call of Duty 4
*EVE
* Team Fortress 2
* World of Warcraft

Old Favourites
These games may not have many people playing regularly, but will probably draw some interest if scheduled.

*Battlefield 2
* Counter Strike: Source
*Call of Duty: United Offensive

Other games
Many games come and go, often being played by only a couple of people. Sometimes interest will flare if somebody raises ones profile again, sometomes not. The other games section has a list of games that certain 5punkers may be interested in playing.

Used to allow us to play older games over the Internet, also allows us to test experimental servers safely and securely.

Hardware Stuff
A heap of stuff about stuff, generally written by Berk or cheeseandham.

The downloads section is passworded so our bandwidth bill doesn't go through the roof from leeching linking sites:
