The Basics
Armed Assault is very like it's older sybling Op Flashpoint and so for 5punky purposes we've lumped them together. It's played only occasionally on 5punk, but there is sometimes a resurgance of interest. A modern era FPS, ArmA focuses on low level tactical combat at section, platoon and company level. With a strong emphasis on combined arms cooperation, the player can get in and use any vehicle, weapon or gun emplacement on the battlefield. Missions are hugely varied and a powerful yet easy to use mission design tool allow simple missions to be created very quickly.

The Juicy Bits
All the missions take place on one large island so there is no 'tunnelling' down a path chosen by the mission designer. There a numerous ways to complete an objective and the open ended format makes replaying the single player game very rewarding. The active community continues to churn out addons, graphical and sound updates that breathe new life into the game. Coop mode is excellent fun and takes a certain amount of skill, thought and planning to achieve mission success. Or we just race tractors round running everyone over.

The Crusty Bits
The new server browser, whilst improved from the original Gamespy driven one in OFP, still leaves a lot to be desired. By far the most significant change though is the ability to join a game in progress, which will revolutionise coop play. There is also an as yet little understood Persistent=1 Modifier in the server ini file, which indicates that there may be potential for running persistent battlefield servers in the future. Although fairly pretty, the graphics and animations are a little dodgy and the physics are not what we have come to expect with more recent games. It would have been nice to see a destructable environment too - no craters here and buildings collapse rather unconvincingly. Voice acting is utterly terrible.

Conclusion
If you want a slightly slower paced FPS with lots and lots of toys where you have time to really think and work as a team, rather than suffering from the "run, run, run, death, rinse and repeat", then ArmA is worth a go.

Have a look at the 5punk Arma Mods List

Friz Tips
Startup parameters:

* Syntax: x:\ArmA\arma.exe -param1 -param2 - param3

* -nosplash : faster startup

* -mod=@modfolder

@modfolder is a folder in ArmA root with all the 3rd party addons you download. Keeps them nice and separate from the original addons folders. You can have any number of addon folders if you want to keep them all apart. Just use -mod=@modfolder1; @modfolder2; etc.

Tips for improving performance. I reckon these settings are the best for performance vs quality.

*Quality: Very High
*Vis: 4000m
*Res: Max (dropping it increased framerate ofc, but I'm a sucker for high res)

*Terrain: High
*Objects: High
*Texture: Normal
*Shading: Normal
*Postpro: Low
*Anisotrop: Low
*Shadow: Low
*AA: Low
*Blood: High

AA and Anistropic set too high makes it go all gooey and looks a bit shit. I sometimes have to drop the terrain detail down a bit if I've got a lot of objects on screen in a heavily wooded area (tree detail is amazing but eats framerate).
The server browser is based on Gamespy and is therefore pretty shitty. There is also no way to join a multiplayer game in progress which is particularly frustrating in longer coop games. Also, being an older game the graphics are a little dated (although servicable) and things such as clipping and physics are not what we have come to expect with more recent games.

If you want a slightly slower paced FPS with lots and lots of toys where you have time to really think and work as a team, rather than suffering from the "run, run, run, death, rinse and repeat", then OFP is worth a go. There is a comprehensive guide to getting the game installed and set up ready for the the Bukkake server on the 5punk forum.

The Basics
Call of Duty (or CoD as we prefer) is traditionally played on a Tuesday evening and comes in three flavours:

Call of Duty,
Call of Duty: United Offensive (basically an expansion to the original CoD), and
Call of Duty 2 (the sequel)

Of the three CoD: UO is by far the most popular. Not because it has the best graphics, the best gameplay or an amazing physics engine (in fact, physics generally doesn't exist in CoD and if you read carefully you will find this noted in Einstein's Theory of General Relativity), but just because it is enormous fun to run around shooting people whilst talking complete and utter gibberish over TeamSpeak.

The Juicy Bits
CoD probably epitomizes the 5punk ethos more than any other game - it's not about how many points you get, it's about having fun. In fact you will notice that no description has been given of the game itself so far - that's because in all honesty, it doesn't matter.

Although games such as CS:S and BEEF are more popular, the TeamSpeak conversations during CoD have probably given rise to more hilarity, 5punk in-jokes and general surrealism than any other games put together. It is of course impossible to recreate the atmosphere of a CoD night TeamSpeak session, but below are a few of the things you might want to listen out for if you decide to join in.

CoD Lingo
AIDS Cannon
You won't have to listen too hard for this one. The AIDS Cannon features on the custom map 'Quarantine' and is effectively a mounted anti-aircraft gun that kills without making a sound! The animation whilst firing also looks amusingly like the player is having a wank. Although the gun itself is silent, it's presence is generally greeted with the singing of either (or sometimes at the same time) of the two songs below...

AIDSAIDSAIDSAIDSAIDSAIDSAIDSAIDSAIDSAIDSAIDSAIDSAIDSAIDS etc

AIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDS CANNON!

Baths
These are sources of great power in CoD, and must be protected at all costs. The bigger the bath, the better. Regardless of scores on a map, whoever is deemed to have held on to a bath for the longest amount of time is the winner.

Teabagging
The art of placing one's testicles upon the cold, dead eyes of a recently defeated foe. If there is no foe readily available, certain other objects will suffice - a radio, a dead cow, a piano...

Treebagging
The art of placings one's testicles in a tree. This is best performed as a group activity.

Death 'Nade
The art of releasing a grenade just as you are killed. Anyone teabagging your corpse at that moment will find their testicles rapidly detached and hurled through the air (into a tree if they are really lucky).

Ninja roof climbing
Climbing on roofs! Like a ninja!

Railings
Found on a map that begins with 'M'. Whoever thought that iron railings could offer invulnerability?
