[[Image:littlebird.jpg|thumb|right|200px|Er, think we supposed to be inside the chopper?]]

==The Basics==
Armed Assault is very like it's older sybling Op Flashpoint and so for 5punky purposes we've lumped them together. It's played only occasionally on 5punk, but there is sometimes a resurgance of interest. A modern era FPS, ArmA focuses on low level tactical combat at section, platoon and company level. With a strong emphasis on combined arms cooperation, the player can get in and use any vehicle, weapon or gun emplacement on the battlefield. Missions are hugely varied and a powerful yet easy to use mission design tool allow simple missions to be created very quickly.

==The Juicy Bits==
All the missions take place on one large island so there is no 'tunnelling' down a path chosen by the mission designer. There a numerous ways to complete an objective and the open ended format makes replaying the single player game very rewarding. The active community continues to churn out addons, graphical and sound updates that breathe new life into the game. Coop mode is excellent fun and takes a certain amount of skill, thought and planning to achieve mission success. Or we just race tractors round running everyone over.

==The Crusty Bits==
The new server browser, whilst improved from the original Gamespy driven one in OFP, still leaves a lot to be desired. By far the most significant change though is the ability to join a game in progress, which will revolutionise coop play. There is also an as yet little understood Persistent=1 Modifier in the server ini file, which indicates that there may be potential for running persistent battlefield servers in the future. Although fairly pretty, the graphics and animations are a little dodgy and the physics are not what we have come to expect with more recent games. It would have been nice to see a destructable environment too - no craters here and buildings collapse rather unconvincingly. Voice acting is utterly terrible.

==Conclusion==
If you want a slightly slower paced FPS with lots and lots of toys where you have time to really think and work as a team, rather than suffering from the "run, run, run, death, rinse and repeat", then ArmA is worth a go.

==Friz Tips==

Startup parameters:

Syntax: x:\ArmA\arma.exe -param1 -param2 - param3

-nosplash : faster startup

-mod=@modfolder

@modfolder is a folder in ArmA root with all the 3rd party addons you download. Keeps them nice and separate from the original addons folders. You can have any number of addon folders if you want to keep them all apart. Just use -mod=@modfolder1; @modfolder2; etc.

Tips for improving performance. I reckon these settings are the best for performance vs quality.

Quality: Very High
Vis: 4000m
Res: Max (dropping it increased framerate ofc, but I'm a sucker for high res)

Terrain: High
Objects: High
Texture: Normal
Shading: Normal
Postpro: Low
Anisotrop: Low
Shadow: Low
AA: Low
Blood: High

AA and Anistropic set too high makes it go all gooey and looks a bit shit. I sometimes have to drop the terrain detail down a bit if I've got a lot of objects on screen in a heavily wooded area (tree detail is amazing but eats framerate).
==The Basics==
Op Flashpoint is played only occasionally on 5punk, but there is occasionally a resurgance of interest. A modern era FPS, OPF focuses on low level tactical combat at section, platoon and company level. With a strong emphasis on combined arms cooperation, the player can get in and use any vehicle, weapon or gun emplacement on the battlefield. Missions are hugely varied and a powerful yet easy to use mission design tool allow simple missions to be created very quickly.

==The Juicy Bits==
All the missions take place on large islands so there is no 'tunnelling' down a path chosen by the mission designer.

==The Crusty Bits==
The server browser is based on Gamespy and is therefore pretty shitty. There is also no way to join a multiplayer game in progress which is particularly frustrating in longer coop games. Also, being an older game the graphics are a little dated (although servicable) and things such as clipping and physics are not what we have come to expect with more recent games.

==Conclusion==
If you want a slightly slower paced FPS with lots and lots of toys where you have time to really think and work as a team, rather than suffering from the "run, run, run, death, rinse and repeat", then OFP is worth a go. There is a comprehensive guide to getting the game installed and set up ready for the the Bukkake server on the 5punk forum.
