Gamemaker

Its just occured to me that this sub forum is terribly named. Anyway...
Ive been bumming about with GameMaker this week. It is awesome fun. Ive attempted to use it in the past and bounced off it entirely. This time I followed along with Tom "Gunpoint" Francis' YouTube series about it called Make A Game With No Experience. Some of the stuff he says makes the bit of me that still remembers programming lectures wince a little, as he often does things not in the technically correct way. As far as getting you to a point where you can actually make games is concerned though, its ace. I thoroughly recommend giving it a go if you are in any way interested in the idea of making games. Dont let the fact that programming is involved scare you off, its pretty easy stuff.
The free version of GameMaker is pretty good too, but I have discovered it does have limits. Nothing that will stop you learning and making simple things, but you will hit issues eventually. For instance, I have just hit the sprite limit in my game because I am up to 20. The little shooter game I made before that had only 4 sprites though, so its only really an issue when you start getting into it properly.
If you do get to that point, definitely don't buy it from Steam. Apparently the updates take ages to come through to Steam, but more importantly is the price. £65 on Steam, $49.99 (£39.48 once you add tax) on their website.
