Ragnarok Online (again)

by Grimmie
Some years ago Berk kindly lent me a bit of Bukakke to host a Ragnarok Online server.
It's a fairly simple Korean MMO from years back that I have nostalgia goggles for.
It also has grasshoppers playing the banjo, mooses that help change your appearance, and custom quests.
There's a free server called RebirthRO that I'm trying out. It has 5x normal experience gain, so it's pretty fast paced.
RebirthRO:

Download the client over torrents (they're fast), make an account, and create a dood on the Ein server.
I've just made a sword-dude, I'll see if I can take some interesting screenshots as I go around.

I'll give this a shot again. Was it RO that let you kill little red blobs and turn them into hats?

Ah, Wobble
Although I confess I never actually saw her in-game.

The one we used was, these people are 'professional' though, they have a micro-transaction system and everything. It's all in English.
I'm Grimbola, swordsman dude.

I'll write a more comprehensive beginners guide later, but for you workshy types, here's a quick one.
Starting area
Talk to everyone, and listen to what they say.
Some of it is nonsense, but most of it is actually useful for the game. Most NPCs will piss experience all over you just to listening to what they have to say, this will cut down the amount of grinding you have to do later (which is actually very little, but any way).
-There's a lady that gives you free buffs right at the start, I believe she's the one standing on the bridge leading in to the castle. There are a couple of these in the game, designed for low-level characters, and they're invaluable.
- When you talk to the lady that says "Open your inventory and drink this potion", actually do it before clicking next, she'll realise you did and give you free stuff to use.
- As you go around, level up your "Basic Skill". Someone will give you the "First Aid" skill for free.
If you got the free buffs at the beginning of the tutorial level though, you should have an auto-heal applied already.
- Assuming you've spoken to everyone, when you've talked to the gate guard and are ready to start hitting stuff in the open field, talk to the first bloke you see - he'll take you to a slightly harder starting area, where you'll get more experience for killing duck-frogs and tree trunks.
- Do the test. IIRC if you choose the job-class what they suggest, you get free stuff.
However, if you don't like what they suggest, then choose what you want, you won't be far disconnected from everyone else, because there's a free fast-travel service in all the town centres.
Check the IRO Wiki for items/builds/classes if you're so inclined.
http://irowiki.org/wiki/Main_Page
Check the RebirthRO Wiki for server commands and such. "@autoloot" is your best friend.

There are some really, really handy custom NPCs I'll talk about when I have a chance, later.
For now though, happy tutorialing!

I'm instantly put off by anything that looks like this, but I may give it a go.

And fried eggs that chase you with saucepans.
NPCs
Handy stuff, these guys. Designed to make your game easier.
Warpra -
http://wiki.rebirthro.com/NPC:Warpra
There's one of these ladies in every town, they can teleport you to every town in the game, and pretty much every dungeon too.
They're useful for meeting up with other people across the map, jumping to a quest location, or picking a specific dungeon to grind through.
Next to the Warpra, and on the outskirts of most towns there's an NPC called a Kafra. They do the same job, but for a price.
You've given a bunch of free tickets to use the Kafra services, but most of their services are free in RebirthRO anyway.
Kafra offer storage, at a price, but you can get this up with the @storage command.
However, Kafra do offer the service to set your respawn town. So, bear that in mind.
Settings -
http://wiki.rebirthro.com/NPC:Settings
There are settings like @autoloot and such that have to be turned on for each character.
This NPC will turn them on/off permanently for your whole account, which is nice.
Novice pot trader -
http://wiki.rebirthro.com/NPC:Novice_Pot_Trader
I had no idea what a pot was, so I tried this NPC out. You can trade common low-level items for.. Potions!
20 Jelopy (the most basic item in the game) translate into a couple hundred health potions, invaluable!
Newbie gear seller -
http://wiki.rebirthro.com/NPC:Newbie_Gear_Seller
Want a two handed sword? Dont have 44,000 Zeny to spare?
This dude will sell you it for 600z. Makes low-level fighting easier.
Beginner buffer -
http://wiki.rebirthro.com/NPC:Beginner_Buffer
Dont have a level 40 priest around to buff your party? Talk to this dude and he'll give you a bunch of buffs that last for 45 minutes.
Head to Pronterra using a Warpra, get your buffs, then head on over to your desired fightin' location.
Universal Rental -
http://wiki.rebirthro.com/NPC:Universal_Rental_Npc
Normally you have to pay to buy a falcon (Archer pet), cart (Merchant tool) or PecoPeco (Knight mount).
This lady provides them for free.

Which means I'll mostly be healing everyone again.

edit: turns out you can get your coordinates by typing /where, i cant remember if theres a better way though but it will do for now

A bunch of us (Mr. J, Shot2Bits, Shada, DogPants) had a go last night, good times.
We got killed a few times and turned Shada into a pistol-wielding racist.
Fun times.
