Nice work Wiggy, that was surprisingly fast. Especially for a 5punker. I'll have a listen later (even though I'll cringe all the way through at the sound of my own voice).

Talky podcasts are generally mixed down to mono, which cuts the size in half. If you've got good microphones and everyone's well mixed, you could can get it down to 64kbps and still have it sound pretty good. It brings Wiggy's mix down to 38Mb.

If I'm honest, I wasn't too fussed about low bitrates because I found it interfered with the quality - I'll have a to mess with the music track next time, I think that's what's buggered the size.

Me too.

And my own voice! Thank you, thank you - I'm here all week.

That wasn't bad actually. I noticed that it felt a lot more natural when we were talking in conversation rather than predefined subjects. I'd have maybe chosen different content to leave in (I'm sure everyone would have a different choice), but the quality of the editing seemed spot on to me. Rock Lobster worked well, although I'd have rather heard an instrumental, and I liked Wiggy's little narrative at the end.

Future efforts should be shorter I think - 90 minutes is a long time to listen to 5punkers rattle on. 30 would be more appealing and would prevent us burning out. We'd just have to limit ourselves to maybe an hour's recording. Also, at risk of being self depreciative, I didn't half come across like a slow-witted thick Northerner. Everyone else sounded good though.

For a first run I think that was pretty promising.

I must admit, I think everyone dislikes the sound of their own voice (at least when it's recorded and played back), I know I do!

Also, if anyone does have a Rock Lobster instrumental, please let me have it (as I couldn't find one)

Oh right I forgot you have a low tolerance for differing opinions. Sorry for pointing something out that would save bandwidth and shorten the download time.

No, I like constructive criticism, not whining like a bitch.

Oh, do be quiet. It absolutely was constructive criticism, stop poking the American.

As for the podcast itself: Jolly good stuff! I would agree that the more natural conversational bits worked better than the more scripted stuff, but it was all entertaining enough to be worth listening to. Maybe have the talking points in reserve for if the conversation starts to die, but other than that just let it amble on wherever it wants to? We are the kings of tangents, seems silly to try and fight that.

Just saying.

Dude, 75MB is a unusually large size for podcasts. It's not like changing the compression options when it's encoded is soooooooooooooooo difficult. Shit, if you're going to whine like a bitch because I pointed something out I'll do the legwork and find the ideal settings, and all that shit.

edit: Also, if I came across like I was knocking the work that has been done then I'm sorry but all I am doing is just pointing out that the file size is too big for what it is. I haven't been involved at any point in this, so to re-encode and host it purely because it's a large file is just asinine. If you guys want I can try my hand at mastering/encoding/file hosting. Instead, you're just being wholly unfluffy.

The problem with the conversation aspect is that it tends to be 5punkers rambling on, which may be funny and interesting to us, but it's not really a reason for anyone else to want to listen. Maybe a middle ground of directed conversation rather than forced discussion points and meandering chat.

Perhaps we could get a non-5punker to have a listen and review?

I'm not familiar with 5punky ways yet, so I can perhaps give a pretty good outsider perspective on it. I didn't get a chance to listen today but will do tomorrow. One thing I would say already though (although said already), just personally, it's a bit too long for one sitting, even with nout better to do.

Good thought. I know someone who is a podcasting afficionado, I'll see what she thinks of it.

I dunno about that. I listen to the Rooster Teeth podcast every week, and it is pretty much exclusively just them rambling on about whatever comes to mind. Its funny, even though a lot of it is just them bitching at each other. Not saying it would definitely work, but as long as it didn't just descend into a string of in jokes that no-one outside of 5punk understands, it could work.

I had a listen last night, nicely done guys. Some funny stuff in there.

I think it would be good to get some kind of standard of audio quality if possible though. Some of you come across clearly, others not.
