Arrietty

So, I went to see this a little while ago. It was my first time seeing a Ghibli on the big screen, and it was a wonderful experience. The story is so-so, and based off the Borrowers in a loosish fashion. Ghibli once again did a magnificent job of packing as much detail as possible in to the scenes that needed it, and letting the flowing animation tell the rest. It's also voiced by English actors.

So imagine my bemusement when looking through YouTube's Trailers channel, and stumbling across a "New" trailer for the "Adventures of Arrietty". Okay, I thought. Maybe they're posting it up late or something. Oh, it's being published by Disney, maybe it's just a re-release trailer. Hang on.. Hang on, those aren't the..

.. So apparently the English dub wasn't exciting enough for the American audience, so they re-dubbed the whole thing with American actors. I found it interesting to see the style of the trailer and how different they were compared to that for a UK audience, and the style of the voices they chose (the boy in the UK dub had the voice of a 8-10 year old, the US one has a broken voice, for example). It's not bad, or wrong.. It's just different, I guess?

I guess the Japanese thought the UK dub was weird when they saw that, too.
It concentrates on the story and relationships more than the action or atmosphere.

The US trailer seems more exciting. Also very long and gives away too much of the story, I stopped watching at about half way through. I want to see it without knowing too much.

It's the Borrowers.

I'm pretty sure the overarching plot isn't going to be too different.

My Mad Max dvd has an American voice dub, it's very, very cringe worthy.

They should have got Mel Gibson to dub it.

Hold on, I know I normally operate within a cloud of negativity, but I'm not saying this couldn't be really good, I'm just saying that as it's sort of semi-based on The Borrowers it should be pretty obvious what things are going to happen.

But like everything, it's not that things are happening that makes it interesting, it's how they happen that does.
