The Amen Break. (Music nerds, ahoy)

Post by Sheriff Fatman »

I've heard this "break" so many times without ever realising its provenance - I stumbled across this 20 minute video and found it utterly fascinating. The narrator could send a crystal-meth head to sleep, but the story is interesting, nonetheless.

Weird that I knew exactly what break it was going to be before he played it. It is used everywhere.

I watched this a while back. Unbelievable that one little drum beat could become so ubiquitous.

Is it wrong that the theme tune from "The Power Puff Girls" came to mind?

That's because it's used in every drum and bass song ever :) We had a lecture on this at uni. Good stuff.

Having watched the whole video now I realise what I said was redundant.

I've actually been quite fascinated with that breakbeat, and variations thereof, for years. Without knowing what it was called or came from. I've even tried to recreate the sound several times, without much success, but I didn't try that hard. If I'd know it was just created by chopping up an existing sample it would have been a piece of cake.
