Last night I had around 20 minutes spare, my laptop and no mouse, so I thought it was a pretty good basis for a test. Using just the keybindings and a bit of trackpad, it was surprisingly easy and fun. Flew round, blew up some CYLONZ, was a pleasant surprise that a mouse isn't *entirely* necessary.

ElvisDuck reporting for duty.

I'm flying a Raptor because dinosaurs are better than snakes.

I think you might find it easier to make money initially, quite a few of the daily assignments (aka daily quests) are mining one or more of the 3 minerals.

Yep, the dinosaur has pushed the snake off a cliff - the picture just needs rotating 90 degrees.

You can always fit a mining laser to your Viper

Yup, I have a mining cannon on the front of my Viper. It also doubles up as a shorter range, less powerful but ammo-less gun in a fight.

I wanted to try both ships but unfortunately, and probably predictably, you can't change once you've chosen. Raptor's are also awesome, I want both kinds of awesome!

You can buy a Raptor from Chief Tyrol. It is 70k Tylium though.

Currently I'm saving my cubits for the Advanced Viper Mk II, after all, once you start hitting planetoids, you don't really need to mine for yourself unless you're fulfilling assignments (or getting the duty ranks). It does take ages though for the Colonial mining ships to get you 40k of whatever mineral you're mining.

The daily quests are annoying me. I've not yet managed to kill a defence platform or managed to win against another player. I've come close on both accounts though, with the platform being down to about 200 health before 2 players in the 10-15 level range came and swatted me.

I could tell I haven't got to that point in the game by thinking "WHUT?!". You can get Colonial mining ships to mine for you?

Yeah, if you go to to systems, you'll see massive asteroids called planetoids, they're on the local map as big grey circles and are targetable in space from any range. If you catch it lucky and see them respawn (or if there's hardly anyone in the system) make a beeline over to them and scan them like normal asteroids.

If they've got resources you'll get a pop up asking if you want to requistion a Colonial Mining Ship to come mine them for 100 cubits.

You'll have to stick around and defend them as often NPC's spawn and try and kill them, but it's worth it if you've got an half an hour/an hour or so free. You can bugger off, dock or even be in another system entire and still get resources, but obviously they'll probably get killed.

First one I found netted me 42k of Water, which was about 8.4k Cubits, I also got about 30k+ Tylium after salvage from killing the npcs that spawned. The second (and third as they were in the same system at the same time), netted me ~20k Titanium in about 10-15 mins. It would have been more but a couple of Cylon players came in and blew me and the mining ships up. Still worth it though.

I've not come across one with Tylium in yet, wiki says they can though, which'll be awesome.

NB: Calling in mining ships on Planetoids don't count towards the mining quotas for the Duties or any assignments you've got.

EDIT: According the BSG wiki, it might be worth hanging out and defending other people's mining ships, as apparently you'll still get resources if you're in the immediate area even if you don't own it.

Is there any way to stop those "Heavy fighting in Perineum sector!" messages flashing up? They're cocking annoying.

This game is getting annoying. The controls keep glitching and it's causing me to lose fights. It's actually starting to piss me off a tad.

An update now I've reached level 11.

It's pay2win. Yes, you can grind your materials to get ships and equipment, but it's so strongly geared towards P2W that it'll take far far far too long.

If I hadn't have bought and fitted a Raptor I'd probably have easily upgraded my Viper to the Adv Mk II (30k cubits), but I'd still be ~150k-200k short on Tylium to get into an Escort ship. As it stands I've got 28k Cubits and losing the will to log in and grind again.

Then there's the actual ships themselves: the Rhino, Viper Mk VII and the other ones that have to be initially bought for Cubits rather than Tylium are all around better. They've all got 3-4 more slots than the others, pretty much meaning if you pay for your Cubits you'll simply be in a ship which outclasses the rest of its class. There's also no way in hell you can grind your way to the silly amount of Cubits required for those bigger ships, enforcing P2W.

Aside from the p2w-ness being ghey, yesterday saw a new update to the game, they've completely redone the website, which now sees the game run in an even smaller window (you can still up to to take the entire tab, or go full screen), but they have added some new content in the form of missions from Adama/Cylon leader. 3 missions at levels 4, 7 and 9.

Might do them to see what they are, but after that, can't see myself logging in as it's a grindfest, and still rather buggy.
