Springdell Crossing is a quiet little community of tradespeople that have set up an open bazaar of goods and trade buildings, anything ranging from spices from the burning sands, to light arms and riding mounts.
Right in the centre of the market is a toll bridge that spans a river, and separates the market in two. Of course, to get from one side to the other you have to pay the toll, and this fee is used to maintain the buildings. Murphy's law still applies in the world of Greyhawk, and predictably the horses you want are on the other side of the river, meaning whoever crosses will have to cough up 1 silver.
Fortunately your horses are all reasonably priced, and of good breed, there's a selection of about ten to choose from, all stabled up beneath a canvas awning.
There are even two riding dogs to choose from. One similar to a St. Bernard, and the other looks a bit like an oversized English Bulldog.

Yay! I'll pay my tol and find myself the prettiest horse. If they have a stripy one I'm having it, otherwise I'll find the one which seems to like me the best. Then I'll spend some time getting a saddle and tack fitted and working out how to use it. After that I'll have a wander about and peruse the market. Since I'm taking my time about the horse-related purchases (since I don't know much about horses), I'll stay another night if needed.

Charisma 1d20+15 (I think?)
3,+15 = 18
150 gold for the dog
10 gold for a riding saddle
4 gold for saddlebags
Re saddlebags: how do they affect encumbrance?
Glibberig comes trotting over on a large Saint Bernard type dog.

They allow animals to carry stuff. Riding dogs can carry a light load of 100lbs.Roman Totale wrote:4 gold for saddlebags

If anyone's bought a mount, you might want to put its details in a character sheet, or just note them somewhere.
You'll also need to roll for its HP, that's the "Hit dice" entry at the top. It gives the dice combination and then the 'average' roll.

Yeah, I wanted to modify that to 2 light potions, that's why I wrote 250g. Anyway, my final is.Grimmie wrote: That's 300g. Will you be purchasing a saddle, bridle and feed with that, sir?
1 warhorse for 150g.
1 potion for 50g.
1 (2?) toll(s?) for 1s (2s?).
Saddle, 1 saddlebag, bridle and ~5 portions of feed for x <= 54 g.
= 200 + x g (<= 254).

Horse bought and geared. I bought up 5 days' feed for on the road and ditched one of the saddlebags because the entry says "saddlebags" (note the plural) which I interpreted to mean it's a single item that hangs over both sides. I've filled one side with grain.
Also, I added an automagic mount section to the Excel character sheet. It works out your mount's load capacity with and without a rider. Turns out I'm a fat bastard, because mine goes from light to medium when I sit on it.

Potions of Darkvision are going for 300gp. A little pricey, but they do allow you to see in total darkness for a whole hour.FatherJack wrote:Just my question about whether there's anything I can buy to improve my eyesight. A ring/potion of nightvision or something.
Rings of Darkvision cost about 16,000gp, and understandably get snatched up pretty quickly by dungeon delvers.
Otherwise, you can stick with torches, lanterns, or get a spellcaster to cast light on something for you.
