Prototype
Prototype - PC (available on the other ones)
Introduction
For a start, this is really just a mini review/first impressions, but I can feel a rant coming on.
Prototype is one of them 3rd person open world killy things, and quite obviously a console port (I'll get back to this later)
Gameplay
Surprisingly for a port the controls work pretty well, even if it often seems more like luck/computer intervention that you got where you wanted to (or occasionally, pull off a massive special move at someone you'd not seen) Though, even with the slightly iffy feeling controls it's quite playable.
Sadly being a console port, it's utterly fucking riddled with (mostly skippable) and the mouse and keyboard controls are a bit laggy feeling.
The story is mostly told using cutscenes, and missions, both of which are pretty average, nothing special, painfully formulaic.
The open world stuff is pretty limited, there's a few challenges to complete, and Very, very occasionally helicopters sent to attack you. I managed to run around for 8 minutes carrying a fucking police car before the helicopter came (I threw said car at helicopter, killed it, got bored)
That leaves you with an open world you don't want to be in, apart from watching hilarious physics spazzes as you run up walls carrying someone.
All of the stuff that sounded interesting pre-release seemed rather, meh, the cutscenes for stealing people gets old fast, transforming/attacky stuff, kinda shiny, but not really much special.
Sounds
Sounds are present, they do the job, don't sound great, not particularly beefy, feel rather 128k mp3.
Sights(Yes, I made a whole section for this)
Dear Radical Entertainment, it's 2009 now, Yes. Really, that late.
Games don't have to look like shit any more, You don't have to make textures that fit on 256meg cartridges.
Allow me to show you what you've been able to do with a PC in the last few years;

So, radical, what the shitting fuck are you doing releasing games that look like this? There's no fucking excuse, get your act together and stop making shit.

Conclusion
Potential for some fun, let down by the gameplay, graphics and sounds.

That really is all it has going for it.Gunslinger42 wrote:I considered sweeping it just because I'd seen a bunch of amazingly ridiculous gifs. Such as one where he was in a small doorway, ran up the wall, onto the ceiling, down the other wall and was right back where he started. Also running up walls while holding a car.

I played Prototype last night until my computer crashed. It's not much, but it is fun. My favourite move is doing a flip onto a taxi, grabbing the taxi, then doing another flip and hurling the taxi at a helicopter.
But yes, there's not all that much to do really. There's only so many times I can wicked flip a taxi into a helicopter before I get bored of it.

I think I got about an hour and a half out of the game, It's fun, but y'know, console fun, not computer game fun.Shada wrote:I played Prototype last night until my computer crashed. I've done a lot of the side missions and enjoyed those, they're reasonably varied and mostly easy to do the first time. Now I'm concentrating on the main quest line and it's becoming a bit more fiddly and frustrating.FatherJack wrote:inFamous disappointed me, though that may be because I just played the story missions rather than mess around.
I'm not sure whether to try this game, having spent quite a lot of time on a similar game.
