Railworks. Wtf is it? Is it like a modern version of OTTD? I keep seeing hilariously expensive DLC popup on Steam and can't imagine how anyone would pay that much for a single train addon, but they keep coming so I guess people do.

People being Akiakaiu. Come on boyo, spill :P What's it all about? :wronghole:

It looks like a Train driving sim, with some route-editing options, rather than a route-building game with an economy. It has various scenarios and preset routes, but does offer some signalling-based fun in the route editing bits.

You drive trains, that's about it. The DLC adds new trains with scenarios or new routes to play on. There is some nice freeware floating around for it too. I haven't had the time to really play with all the editors but you can do a lot with it. For now I just go on 2 hour train rides, or do some passenger services.

Giant Bomb has a fairly entertaining and informative (for the uninitiated) video on RailWorks - http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-railworks/17-2557/

That game looks, well, ridiculous. The best thing about that video is that it just about shows my house when they're going over the bridge heading out of the station at the start.

Not quite what I had in mind. I was after a trainset thinger, kind of like a more sophisticated version of OTTD.

Railroad Tycoon do it? My steam spy tells me you are a proper train geek AKi

The Tycoons are fun, so is Sid Meier's Railroad, that's the prettiest of the bunch. I haven't played much of RT3 since it's not playable on Fista or Win7, I did play a bunch of RT2 and that was cool. Build rail lines, build up your cities and transport people, mail, goods to and from to make cash to expand your lines. One day I should actually try OTTD, I downloaded it, started it up when I didn't have time to play and never went back.

A glance at the RT games suggests they are a lighter in terms of customisation compared to TTD - which only shares the 'Tycoon' branding, nothing else - but more pleasing graphically.

You seem to build your own factories, so it's more a case of plonking a profitable network near a city and joining it up than TTD's more involved planning of track layout.

I'd certainly like to give them a go, at £6 for RT3 it looks quite the bargain, but stalwarts tell me RT2 is the better game, save for the lack of tunnels - it still looks prettier than OTTD (what doesn't?) - so the £15 for the set is pretty tempting.

Edit: Too tempting.

I was hunting around last night. In short:

OTTD - years of players fettling to make it better, so good trainset fun but weak economy

Railway Tycoons
- #2 is good but lacks some of the advanced track laying features
- #3 has very advanced economy. Maybe too advanced (there's a fix to get it working in Fista/7)
- Railroads = pretty, kids game

There's also a bunch of indie stuff knocking around, many of which are rehashes of OTTD. One that looks quite good and is out (graphics notwithstanding) is Simutrans.

I'm going to give it a try.

I still prefer Railroad Tycoon 1 on the Amiga, although 2 is very good.

No tunnels? Really? Could have sworn there was.

That just looks like a remarkably ugly clone.

There are a few mods for OTTD, might be worth looking into those.

Yep, Simutrans is a terribly ugly clone, although it does have a little more depth to the economic model the eye hurt kinda turns you off pretty quickly. As it is OTTD is still the best out there imo, and not unsurprisingly given the vast amount of effort put into it by the community to improve the game. It's a shame that the engine rather limits it (even with mods - these just add more of the same rather than changing anything much).

I bought RRT2 for £3 off steam and having a play with that but it rather lacks the trainset building fun. Railroad Tycoon economics with SC4 roads/traffic modeling and OTTD interface would be a very neat mix.
