hiring a server

Post by electrolaze »

there was talk of possibly hiring a server - i've been looking around, and https://servers.unrealtournament.com are hiring private servers for $4 (?2.60) per player slot, and 8 player slots minimum must be purchased. thats $32 (?21). The servers are in america and last for a month. i think that information is correct, but check to make sure at the above link. It would need one person to purchase it all, so if they set up a paypal account, and everybody wishing to play sent ?3 to it, then that would roughly equal the right price.

Jolt: http://www.jolt.co.uk
?34 (?50) a month but on other pages it says ?37 and when you go to order, the price jumps up to ?42 or ?52. :?
European
Joint pay due to jolt's clan pay system (seeing as we are the [B3ta] clan)
12 or 16 player option
(not sure about this one)

wicked servers: http://services.wickedservers.com/services/signup/game_rentals/ut2k4/dark_scrimage.php
$54 (?36) per month for 12 people (?3 per person)
american server

Digital servers: http://www.digitalservers.co.uk/ut2004.html
12 players is ?21 per month (?1.75 per person)
UK server
ooh, and paypal

Instant game server: http://www.instantgameserver.com/clanserver.php
?30 for 12 (?2.50 per person)
UK server
Free trial

Well, at the moment, it looks like Digital servers is the best, at ?1.75 per person. As Stoat said "hmmm.... a month of UT... or a pint. hmmm..... I'm going to need to think about it... no stupid downloads... no l33ters... nice."

Keep looking

To be honest, I'm not sure.

If we did, it'd have to be in the UK, so as to have a low ping.

but - there are so many servers open to the public on there that are completely empty, that it seems a shame to be buying one.

I'll go with the majority - because 1.75 isn't actually that much.

Plus, somebody will have to organise the whole thing, and collect money off people every month etc. and I know how much of a pain in the arse that can be.

I don't have the time to do this yet, but once this site has 40,000+ members, and I'm extremely rich through paypal donations, I will rent a server for free for all of you

In all seriousness though, I think there aren't enough dedicated players at the moment to consider it.

If it's worth fucking up, it's worth fucking up properly.... or something like that!
