Moved to GH and created Forenrond Shankley, Human Thief. Actually enjoying the thief most of the classes I've played so far.

Thief is brilliant. Shortbow is excellent for group events where there are lots of enemies, and either dagger/dagger or pistol/dagger are great for solo. I also imagine they must be incredibly frustrating to play against in PvP (not had chance to try it et but it looks fun)

I did the starting encounters with dagger and it was brutal. How do offhand weapons work though? I only get access to the other skillset when I switch them round.

Off hand skills occupy slots 4 and 5. In the case the thief slot 3 is based on both your weapons and which hand they are in. Skills always unlock in order, 1 to 5, regardless of anything else.

Here's me: Moogi/Asura/Guardian. Will take one of them there invites.

Depending upon the combination, your skills could be completely different e.g. Dagger main hand and pistol offhand gives a different set of skills to Pistol main hand dagger offhand, despite them being the same weapons.

Every time you equip a new weapon type you have to unlock those specific skills (by killing doods), but once unlocked you don't have to do it again, even if you switch weapons.

Thief can use:

Shortbow (both hands) - good for ranged and groups of enemies
Sword (main hand only) - melee, slowish, good damage
Dagger (main and off hand) - melee, fast, good to use if you have high chance to crit
Pistol (main and off hand) - ranged, medium speed, good for single targets and keeping your distance

In terms of weapon combos:

Dagger/dagger - excellent for speed and criticals
Sword/dagger - high damage but slow
Sword/pistol - high damage, but too middle of the road
Pistol/dagger - good damage, great for ranged attacks and evasive attacks when enemies get too close
Dagger/pistol - good damage, good for melee with options to attack advancing or fleeing enemies

In case it went unnoticed, I've added a useful guides/links post at the top. There are some nifty skill tinkering thingies to play around with which will show you what can be achieved with various weapons combinations.

I'm currently summoning up the courage to delve into another MMO and may be joining soon™

Cheers guys. Incidentally, the scaling group quests and weapon skills/combos are adding a nice veneer to the MMO formula for me. It's still there in the background, but it feels a lot less constrictive at the moment.

Because I accidentally left the guild when transferring servers, Joose will need to promote people (right click on the symbol next to their name in the guild window).

Be warned, names which raise a GM eyebrow may get you a short ban. Also abusing people in chat, but if people do that I don't care if they ban them.

Rejoice, 5punkers! I am amongst you.

Sherf - Guardian - Human

I also plan to try out Ele, Ranger, and Mesmong over the the next few days - so if you are planning an alt - lerrus know and we can test our class "synergy" (ormorelikelygetdrunkanddie). I've read that warriors and Guardians play well, which is obviously great news for Friz.

Warriors and Guardians play well, that doesn't mean I do! But I do like how warriors are very versatile - guns, bows, swords, shields, axes etc. I quite like the look of the jizmer though, I might have to give one a go at some point

I've got a fairly basic mesmer (lvl10) and from what I've seen of him they seem like pretty handy utility characters. Not sure how they handle themselves in a straight fight yet, but for group action and WvW they have potential.

I'm over on the US servers (Tarnished Coast), but I'll join the guild if i'm able to. I don't think guesting works over EU to US or something. I've hit this game pretty hard. I'm working on my 8th character. :ahoy:

Try adding "Militis Malleferrum"

They like to keep US/Europe separate. Stops us breeding or something. But they can never stop our love!

Well boo hiss. What are we going to do when they finally implement Guild vs Guild battles and we inadvertently find ourselves going up against a group of Frenchies? I want to be there when we get rolled! Just like old times!
