Star Wars: Battlefront

Post by Grimmie »

Okay, excuse the separate threads for each game - but I have a feeling some of these might go run-away once they're launched, a bit like the Payday 2 thread did. Plus it's a little hype sanctuary to seclude yourself in.

OHHHHMUHGOD.

So, people were worried that the launch trailer looked too good? This is looking acceptable levels of actual-gameplay-footage good. Also, this is probably the first Battlefield game I'll be buying on launch. Look at dat TIE cockpit. Oh man.

I've never really enjoyed the Battlefront games, they always seemed poor clones of BF2...this however, has all the good bits of the old 90's Shadow of the Empire, wrapped up in 2015 dressing and looks very Star Warsy and quite fun.

Potentially a breakout mulitplayer game if it turns out well.

That's definitely real gameplay but it has that E3-polish that all the trailers have. I never really played the old battlefront games but if they were BF2 clones than now DICE has a real moment to shine, their last 2 battlefield games did nothing for me and I'm a huge battlefield fan.

Go on DICE, this is your chance. Make this work.

I merged the Fallout 4 threads as the old one was quite fresh and not too long. However it would be a good idea to have separate threads for the big E3 titles.

Looks a bit more interesting that your normal man shoot, but who'd want to be a stormtrooper? They can't hit anything. They should just Death Star everything instead of fucking about on the planets.

I had fun with Jedi Knight multiplayer, which along with another game with a suspiciously similar title to this one kind of promised more than they delivered and were kind of niche in terms of active players even at time of launch. This title certainly has better graphics, hopefully other things have improved too.

I'm not really convinced by any of this. The graphics, sound, and animation are amazing, but there was nothing to convince me that the actual game was going to be any good. What was the rocket launcher power-up? Was that scout walker taking damage from a pistol? There looked to be an abundance of flyers dominating the battlefield, again. I know there are no classes, and I know that the 'squads' are limited to two people. I can live with the first, the second seems pointlessly restrictive. The elite characters could go either way, but if they're based on kill streaks then there's a fair chance that'll be the wrong way. The co-op mode is just wave survival, which was about the most unoriginal thing they could have come up with. And we don't know what they're going to do with the community-dividing DLC that's plagued BF3 and 4. I admit I'm being cynical, and I hope I'm pleasantly surprised, but I've just seen nothing to indicate that this is going to be a good game.

Good point, when this does come out its players will be easier to wind up than those Chivalry Lightsaber mod players.

I wonder if they'll have grenades that lob you across the map. And bows.

Think I mentioned this on Teamspeak the other night, but I've been playing BF4 a bit recently and not long after I received an invite to the closed alpha, starting this Thursday 9am and ending the following Monday.

Worth checking your origin email account to see if you've been invited. Might be based on playing BF4 in a recent timespan though.

Didn't even buy be4f, looks like it's awesome, but I have no doubt it'll infuriate me same as it always does with heli/plane rape and dickheads not playing maps properly.

Also fuck you EA for churning another one of these out every few months.

I've only just gotten into it. If you can get it for cheap, it's well worth it I would say. Some of the BACON inspired bomb gametypes are pretty cool and get you away from the vehicle rape.

I could live with a Star Wars themed BACON analogue. My two concerns are the small squad size and the potential DLC requirements that plagued BF 3 & 4.

Fresh news: No server browsers, it's all matchmaking. It's like we're back in 2009 with Modern Warfare 2. Unless they have a 'join on friends' option, that and the 2-man squads might have just killed it as a 5punky game.

Didn't they blast one of the Battlefield games for doing that? Weird decision.

RPS have done a preview based on the beta and seem generally pretty pleased. Bullet points for tl;dr:

* It looks so beautifully Star Wars. More so than anything in a long time.
* It sounds so beautifully Star Wars. More so than anything in a long time.
* It's more COD than BEEF, in that it's twitchy headshot gameplay rather than careful tactical combat.
* The single player wave modes got a nod of approval.
* The matchmaking was pretty pants (but then beta, so YMMV).
* The vehicles were fun.
* The heroes were kind of out of place.

So all may not be lost, although Star Wars Quake 3 makes me think it might be worth waiting.
