Guidelines & Tips

Post by spoodie »

Guidelines:

1. Be creative

If your review is formulaic and dull people will not read it or at least not enjoy reading it. You do not need to follow the examples of reviews you've read in magazines, do what ever you feel like, just make sure you get your point across.

2. Spellcheck

Personally I use gmail to verify my spelling. Before your final posting copy and paste the whole lot into a new email and run the spellchecker, then copy and paste the whole lot back again. Alternatively use http://www.spellcheck.net/

3. End your review with a score

This is of course optional but many readers find them useful. You can use either the stars format from the template, a numbered score out of 10/100 or both.

4. A Conclusion is essential

A brief summary of your opinions of the game is useful for reminding the reader of the high and low points.

5. Try to be objective

Think about what others might enjoy (or not) about the game, remember a review is not just a vehicle for you to rant or rave about a game it's also to help the reader judge whether they want the buy the game or not.

Here: http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/media/?id=13224 is an article about what Game Developers hate about Game Reviewers. While it might initially sound like they are whinging, and it can be argued that 5punk Reviewers owe nothing to Game Developers, it has some valid points about making your review fair.
