Dying graphics card?

If you touch your software enough does it become hardware?

Dying graphics card?

Post by Mr. Johnson »

Yesterday, whilst playing a quick late night game of rocket league that I was most certainly winning, my screen had a lot of pink squares on it and suddenly froze. I decided it was a worry for tomorrow as it was late. Turns out it was more of a worry than I thought it would be as now I couldn't boot my pc at all. fearing the worst, I opened up the case, checked all the cables and blew off some of the dust in there and booted my pc in safe mode. That seems to work but even in safe mode I get a lot of little green pixels everywhere.

I'm not sure what it is now as the not being able to boot might indicate something different than my graphics card amiss. What am I not seeing?

Help me bitches!

Oh, and there's an array of red lights on my graphics card, I'm not sure those were shining there before.

That sounds a lot like a fucked GPU to me, which is bad.

It could be a RAM issue, but unlikely. try the windows memtest thing (c:\Windows\system32\mdsched.exe) to check.

Testing ram now, but in case it's the GPU, will changing my graphics card fix that? Or are we talking about the shiny silver square in the middle of my motherboard? (legit computer terms)

Your shiny square is probably okay.

OCCT will let you test your shiny square, your sheet of fans, and your wirey box.

But yeah, what FJ said.

Okay, off to the update thread I go.

I'll run OCCT to be sure, but I needed a new graphics card anyway so maybe it's not all bad.

New graphics card has been got alarmingly fast, but upon installing I noticed it had a 8-slotted power supply and I only have two 6-pronged ones. I tried it anyway and it seems to work, but is this something I should be worried about?

If it works, I wouldn't worry too much, the missing pins are just earths anyway.

You can get 6 to 8 pin adapters, but I'm not convinced they're a good idea, actually surprised there's not one in the box.

Yeah, there wasn't much else in the box but I'll get an adapter just to be sure.
